Llyn Parc Mawr Community Woodland Group became constituted in April 2015. The purpose of Llyn Parc Mawr Community woodland group is to establish Llyn Parc Mawr as a sustainable woodland area to benefit wildlife and contribute to the well-being of the community of Newborough and District and for public enjoyment.
Llyn Parc Mawr are currently delivering a 5 year National Lottery funded project called, ‘Connecting Communities and Nature, creating a sustainable woodland space for all’. The project includes the delivery of a social history project aimed at celebrating the cultural and natural heritage of the area.
Stories of Newborough Forest Project
The main aim of the ‘Stories of Newborough Forest’ project is to celebrate the creation and management of Newborough forest since it was created, in large part by members of the community, over 60 years ago. The project will explore the history of the planting and subsequent management of Newborough Forest and in particular at Llyn Parc Mawr by talking to the people who have strong historic/present links to the forest and by collecting photographs and archives linked to the forest.
Stories and photographs will be collected and collated to highlight this important part of the community’s history so that this cultural and natural heritage can be celebrated with the community. The plan is to create an exhibition and community event in order to stimulate a conversation about the community’s relationship with the forest now and in the future.
Children of the parents who were responsible for planting the first trees at Llyn Parc Mawr and the Newborough forest estate still live locally. Key individuals within the community are torch bearers of local cultural and natural history, who want to tell the story of the area and to pass on this knowledge to the younger ones in the community.
The Llyn Parc Mawr community woodland group will work with a steering group of people within the community to tell these important stories and involve the whole community in Newborough and District.
